Terminology and legacy

To avoid confusion, this analysis distinguishes between a toggle switch (a single slider for binary on/off states, like a light switch) and a toggle button or segmented control (a group of buttons for selecting mutually exclusive options, e.g., List View vs. Map View, not simple on/off).

Toggle switches, based on skeuomorphism, mirror physical light switches. Their familiarity is their key strength. It allows users to instinctively understand their immediate activation.

Even though the toggle switch reminds us of a real light switch, that's also its downfall in digital apps.
